Holmes vs. South Laurel

Two diffrent styles of play come to Rupp in the second round of the state tournament playing for a spot in the final four. The South Laurel Cardinals from the 13th region versus the Holmes Bulldogs. South Laurel's three ball gave them an early lead on Holmes. Holmes ahd trouble get into rhythm of play of driving and crashing the boards in the first quarter. But dispite Holmes's play they still managed to be trailing end of the first quarter by 2. South Laurel-12, Holmes-10. Even though Holmes was outsized in the post they still continued to crash the bords fatiguing South Laurel's big men. Both teams continued to answer back and forth but Holmes manages to keep their lead. Holmes leads at halftime 22-20. At the conclusion of the first half South Laurel shot 40% and Holmes 30.8%. In the second half Holmes finally fell into their groove and began to penatrate the South Laurel's 2-3 matchup zone defense. Holmes crashed the boards hard and kept the lead for the remainder of regulation. South Laurel was out of their game shooting only 29.6% from the field. Holmes struggled shooting too but their offensive rebounds allowed them to make up missed opportunities. Ty Proffit played 31 minutes and did'nt score any of his points until the beginning of the fourth quarter. He was second in scoring for his team with 12 points. Teammate Jordan Hammonds lead the team in scoring with 18 points. Both leading scorers of the game came from Holmes. Greg Rice was leading scorer with 23 points and teammate Austin Hill scored 21 points to make up well over half of their teams points. Holmes pulled away by hitting their free throws in the stretch giving them a victory over South Laurel 55-49.
